This should be a book for kids.
People are people; on that we agree.
And all deserve rights. This anyone can see.
But to be honest, and be honest we should,
Let’s check our premises, to see if they’re good.
Distinctions between gender and sex,
May seem confusing, and cause perplex
So let us take time to explain them here.
Sex is biological difference, that much is clear,
and gender is sex, perceived in the social sphere.
Female or male is sex, what we are within, that you can see,
and gender’s what makes them feminine or masculine, respectively.
Gender and sex are different, it’s important to note.
But they are interdependent, not completely remote.
Thus one’s gender, is normatively tied to one’s sex.
To say that it’s not, leads to problematic effects.
For if gender is something that we can choose,
Then valid distinctions ‘tween sexes we lose.
For if males are women, and females are men,
Orientations collapse, since people would be in the same kin.
But orientations exist, as many attest,
Since we’re attracted to some people, and not all the rest.
Furthermore, and I don’t mean to vent,
But if one can be neither or both, then its irrelevant.
For to say that no actual distinctions exist,
Makes it impossible for the gender to actually subsist.
There is more on this issue of which I could say,
But brevity begs me to save it for another day.
Therefore, I’ll finish on this note, this thesis I proclaim:
All people are equal, but we’re not all the same.
